What is the Home library service?

We provide a Home Library service for the residents of Walsall of any age who, because of illness, disability or frailty, are unable to visit their local library. The service is also available to carers who have difficulty accessing a library service because of their caring responsibilities.

We also have a Home Library Officer who speaks a number of Asian languages and is dedicated to providing a Home Library Service to the Asian community in Walsall.

How do I become a customer?

  • A resident of Walsall Metropolitan Borough?
  • Unable to get to a local library because of illness, disability or frailty
  • Unable to carry materials to and from a library?
  • A full time carer?

You will be contacted by one of our Home Library Officers who will make an appointment to visit you in your own home. A monthly visit will be arranged for the same day every four weeks, when the Home Library Officer will deliver your library items. You can borrow enough items to last until the next visit.

Each Officer carries an official identification badge and uses a white transit van with the Walsall Council logo on its sides.

Customers are also referred to us through other agencies such as Social Services or the Walsall Society for the Blind.

What can I borrow?

There’s a wide range of stock available including:

  • Fiction and non-fiction books in standard and large print formats
  • Audio books on CD and MP3
  • Music CDs and a selection of DVDs

Our Asian stock includes books in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu languages, as well as a selection of music CDs and DVDs.

Is there a charge for this service?

There is no charge for the service, it is completely FREE.

It is also free to request any particular item, so just let the Home Library Officer know what you need.

They can advise you on the latest publications, as well as signpost you to Council services and other information as required.
